President's Letter - March 2025

Well, here I am in mid-February sitting and watching the birds at the feeder with the fresh snow hanging on the trees ... and writing the March President's letter for The Seed.

First, congratulations to MG Cat Kahn and the HarvestShare group for their educational and fun "2025 Seed Share" event on Saturday, February 8, 2025. It was great to see so many MGs teaching about scrap gardening, various types of soil, growing seedlings under lights, growing plants in grow bags and other containers, and seed sowing in milk jugs. There were lots of give-away seed packets for enthusiastic participants too.

Second, a reflection on what's going on at MCMG during the winter. Throughout the winter the Therapeutic Horticulture (TH) groups have been busy sharing themed garden projects with assisted living residents. TH has openings for volunteers every day of the week except Sunday and Monday throughout each month. The Demonstration and Youth Gardens are busy ordering seeds and soil, and looking for volunteers to tend the gardens and teach about gardening beginning this April. The Public Relations committee has ordered brochures and cards to give away at our upcoming events. Garden Discovery Day and Close Encounters with Agriculture (CEWA) have begun planning, and will need many of us to volunteer at their big events in the fall. Plant Clinics, Urban Gardening, Food Rescue & Gleaning, and others are getting ready for March and April openings. The Community Events committee is gearing up for one-day workshops for kids in the garden, as well as traditional one-day tables at community events. The Bay-Wise (BW) program is undergoing some reorganization at the state level, and our BW committee is getting ready for site visits beginning in May to certify Montgomery County residents' gardens.

I appreciate everyone's commitment to the MCMG's mission, and hope that you will be able to volunteer for some of the upcoming activities. I look forward to seeing you soon!
